A few days ago I had read some news about a project mainly addressed to tourism, called 'Laurel Forest Coast' ('Costa da Laurissilva') which, among other initiatives, would aim at recuperating the old cobblestone roads of a large part of the Northwestern coastline of Madeira. This being one of my favorite themes, it made me become very curious, having therefore asked for an interview with the Mayor of Porto Moniz, who gently shared with me the information he has at this startup stage.
It is a joint project of the three Northern Madeira county councils: Porto Moniz, São Vicente and Santana, which main objective is to divulge all the aspects characteristic to the mentioned zones, attracting the tourist as well as the local's attention and making them become more and more interested to travel to the North side of the island and to stay there for a longer time than what has been usual until now. In short, contribute to the notion of decentralizing attraction centers, giving the visitor a range of initiatives and activities the North coast has a potencial capacity to offer. From walks to several outdoor activities such as climbing, canyoning and others, comprising also projects of scientific nature related to the biodiversity, comon denominator of which is the Laurel Forest, already awarded with the Mankind World Heritage reward, yet still able to offer more interesting points. Cumulatively, activities of cultural nature that may portrait the past and the present times of the island life on the areas defined by the project.
The works connected to the initiative will be vast, comprising recuperation and improvement of "levadas", footpaths and old cobblestone roads, framing into the available countryside lodging, organization of fairs and exhibitions, extending the use of science and exhibition centers already available. Among the desirable consequences, obviously and through spreading out of events within this global picture, there will be a better and better knowledge of the Northern Madeira and activation of the local economy, extending to the global one in multiple sectors. |

We repeated this year our travel along the road from Calheta to Ponta do Pargo, and again we 'discovered' the cribs one can see by the road side.It is still interesting and worthy of remark the comunity works involved on buldings these small marvelsof creativity and Christmas spirit.
A strong reason for those who just hang around town (to be noticed, however, how many wonderful cribs that can be seen there) to spread their horizons to the countryside and come finding out these tiny oasis of enchantment, some shown on 'Pictures of the Month'. |

A new merry time is coming. This time bringing along with it what I think a somewhat gloomy feeling when compared with previous ones, times being of contention, finantial sacrifice and hard days for many. From the needy ones, the anguish of thinking what they have lost, and of what they still have to face, awfull one in many cases. From the less needy ones, the also depressing thought that, despite their will to help, there often not a lot of means to do it... Unless aybe onm small things, details and small giving away, little gestures with which one might eventually soften the days of whom was left with so little. But we stillç lack the experience to identify these little nothings, so often within eyesight but which we don't identify, in spite of all our good will...
On the other hand and observing carefully the hard times we have to face, certainly the non-material, consumer-free human component will show itself, takin advantage of any small gift nature offers us. Among others, for example going to the hillside and collecting natural moss rather than using the artifical one on our cribs. And on these merry days those cribs, one of the roots of the Madeiran feeling, will have nothing to loose with that.
Above everything else, we should raise the green flag of Hope for the coming new year. Focusing on the capacity to overcome troubled times, to find new ways of carrying life forward and find alternatives, abandon the 'look like' side of life and replace it by the 'really being' true side. According to which every one of us may count as human being rather than a number on sales statistics. Let us all be brave enough to change. And I think we shall all feel better once we do it. |
